If you live in Darwin, you know the wet season doesn't mess around. One minute it's blue sky; the next, a wall of rain is coming across the harbour.
But people move house in the wet every single day. With the right planning, your furniture arrives dry, your boxes stay intact, and nobody slips down the stairs. Here's how.
The short version: Book a morning slot, pack in plastic tubs where you can, wrap everything, protect your floors, keep a towel station at both doors, and unpack and air things out fast to beat the humidity.
When is the wet season?
| Period | Roughly | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Build-up | October – December | Extreme humidity, heat, afternoon storms |
| Wet season | December – April | Monsoonal rain, heavy downpours, storms |
| Cyclone season | 1 November – 30 April | Possible cyclone watches and warnings |
For moving, the two big challenges are rain on the day and humidity afterwards.
Before moving day
1. Book a morning slot
Build-up and wet season storms often roll in during the afternoon. An early start gives you the best chance of loading in dry conditions.
2. Ask about the weather policy
Before you book, ask your removalist: - What happens if there's lightning or a severe storm? - Can you reschedule for a cyclone watch or warning? - Are there any rescheduling fees?
✎ Edit: Add your wet season / cyclone rescheduling policy here, e.g. "We'll reschedule free of charge if a cyclone watch or warning is issued for your area."
3. Use plastic tubs for important things
Cardboard and Darwin rain don't mix. Use sealable plastic tubs for: - Documents and photos - Electronics and cables - Linen and clothing - Anything you'd hate to see water-damaged
If you use cardboard, choose new, double-walled removal boxes and tape both the top and bottom seams fully.
4. Wrap furniture properly
Ask your removalist about: - Plastic mattress covers - Stretch wrap for couches and upholstered chairs - Furniture blankets plus plastic over the top for timber pieces
Our packing services include wet-weather wrapping.
5. Keep an eye on the forecast
Check the Bureau of Meteorology from a few days out. If a tropical low or cyclone is developing, talk to your removalist early about options.
On moving day
Set up a dry zone
- Lay drop sheets or old towels inside both front doors
- Put down floor protectors or cardboard on tiles — wet tiles are slippery
- Keep a towel station at each door to wipe items before they go inside
Make a dry path
If your truck can't park right at the door, use a carport or verandah as a staging area. Many Darwin homes have a covered area under the house — perfect for keeping things dry between the door and the truck.
Load in the right order
Your removalist will load heavy and solid items first. Ask them to load moisture-sensitive items (mattresses, electronics, upholstered pieces) last, so they come off first and get inside fastest.
Stay safe
Wet steps on elevated homes are a real hazard. Keep kids and pets out of the way, and let the crew set the pace.
After the move: beat the humidity
Rain is the obvious risk. Humidity is the sneaky one. Damp or sealed-up items can grow mould within days in Darwin's wet season.
- Unpack soft items first — mattresses, linen, clothes and couches
- Run the air-conditioning or a dehumidifier in the first few days
- Leave wardrobe doors slightly open for airflow
- Never leave damp items sealed in plastic
- Wipe timber furniture with a dry cloth if it got wet
- Check stored boxes within a week

Cyclone season and moving
Most wet season moves go ahead without a problem. But if a cyclone watch or warning is issued for your area:
- Don't move. Safety comes first.
- Secure what you've already packed, and keep your emergency kit handy.
- Talk to your removalist about the next available date.
- Check with your real estate agent about handover dates if you're leaving a rental.

Moving out of a rental in the wet?
Wet season moves and end-of-lease cleans go together badly when they're booked separately — muddy floors after the move mean the cleaners have more work to do. Our Move + Bond Clean package schedules the clean straight after the truck leaves, so it's done once and done right.
Is the wet season a good time to move?
It can be. The dry season (May–September) is peak moving time in Darwin, so wet season dates are often easier to book. You'll just need to plan around the weather.

The wet season generally runs from about December to April, after the hot, humid build-up from October. Cyclone season officially runs from 1 November to 30 April.
What happens if a cyclone is forecast on moving day?
Your removalist should reschedule if a cyclone watch or warning affects your area. Ask about their weather and rescheduling policy before you book.
How do I stop furniture getting mouldy after a wet season move?
Unpack quickly, run the air-conditioning or a dehumidifier, keep wardrobes slightly open for airflow, and never seal damp items in plastic.
