Moving to Darwin: The Complete Relocation Guide

Thinking about moving to the Top End? You're in good company. Every year thousands of people relocate to Darwin for work, Defence postings, family, or simply the lifestyle — warm weather, outdoor living, sunsets over the harbour and a laid-back pace.

This guide covers what you actually need to know before you arrive: the seasons, where to live, how to get your belongings here, and the admin to sort out once you land.

Quick checklist: Pick your arrival season · Choose an area · Book your removalist early · Transfer car rego within 28 days · Transfer your licence within 3 months · Set up power, water and internet before you arrive.

1. Understand Darwin's seasons

Darwin doesn't really have four seasons. It has two main ones — and a famous in-between.

Season Roughly What it's like
Dry season May – September Warm days, cooler nights, low humidity, almost no rain. Peak tourist and moving season.
Build-up October – December Hot and very humid, with storms starting to build.
Wet season December – April Monsoonal rain, spectacular storms, high humidity. Cyclone season officially runs November to April.

What this means for your move: - Arriving in the dry is the most comfortable, but removalists book out early. Plan ahead. - Arriving in the wet often means more availability, but your move needs weather planning. Read Moving House in the Wet Season.

2. Choose where to live

Greater Darwin is spread out, and each area has a different feel.

City and inner suburbs — Darwin CBD, Larrakeyah, Stuart Park, Parap, Fannie Bay, Cullen Bay Apartments and older homes, close to the waterfront, markets and restaurants. Great for professionals and couples. Expect lift bookings and tight parking on moving day.

Northern suburbs — Casuarina, Nightcliff, Rapid Creek, Tiwi, Wanguri, Leanyer, Wulagi, Karama and more Established family suburbs near Casuarina Square, Charles Darwin University and the Royal Darwin Hospital. Lots of classic elevated homes.

Palmerston — Bellamack, Zuccoli, Rosebery, Johnston, Gunn, Durack and more About 20 minutes from the city. Newer estates, more space, popular with young families and Defence households.

Rural area — Howard Springs, Humpty Doo, Coolalinga, Virginia, Bees Creek Acreage living with room for sheds, boats and animals. Longer drives, and moves here need planning for long driveways.

3. Decide what to bring

Shipping to Darwin is priced by volume, often $200–$300 per cubic metre on backload. That changes the maths on what's worth bringing.

Bring: - Quality furniture and mattresses - Sentimental and hard-to-replace items - Tools, outdoor gear and anything expensive to replace

Think twice about: - Cheap flat-pack furniture - Heavy items you rarely use - Winter clothing (you won't need much!) - Furniture that doesn't suit humidity — some veneers and leather don't love the tropics

4. Get your belongings here

You have three main options:

Option Cost Speed Best for
Backload Lowest 14–28 business days Flexible dates, smaller moves
Container Medium Varies Packing at your own pace
Dedicated truck Highest Fastest, fixed dates Tight deadlines, large homes

Tip: Your furniture may arrive after you do. Line up short-term accommodation, or pack an essentials kit with bedding, clothes, kitchen basics and important documents.

5. Bringing your car

You can drive up (it's a big trip — 3,000–4,000 km from most capitals) or use a car carrier. Once you arrive:

  • Vehicle registration: transfer to the NT within 28 days of arriving
  • Driver licence: transfer within 3 months. There's no fee to transfer a current interstate licence (renewal fees apply if you renew at the same time). If your licence has no conditions, you can do it at an Australia Post office that offers MVR services.

Always check the current rules on the NT Government website before you go.

6. Set up your utilities

  • Electricity: Jacana Energy is the main retailer. Set up an account before your move-in date — you'll want air-conditioning working from day one.
  • Water: supplied by Power and Water Corporation.
  • Internet: check NBN availability for your new address early. Some rural properties rely on fixed wireless or satellite.

7. Living in the tropics: quick tips

  • Air-conditioning matters. Ask about it when you're choosing a rental.
  • Watch for mould. Humidity can cause mould in wardrobes and stored furniture. Read our packing tips for Darwin humidity.
  • Respect the water. Saltwater crocodiles live in Top End waterways, and box jellyfish are a risk in the warmer months. Only swim where it's signposted as safe.
  • Be cyclone ready. Have a plan and an emergency kit from November.

8. Moving for Defence?

Darwin is home to RAAF Base Darwin and Robertson Barracks, and many families arrive on posting. Read our Defence relocation guide for Darwin.

If you're renting, keep a copy of your ingoing condition report and take date-stamped photos when you move in. It makes the end of your tenancy much simpler. When it's time to move out, our Move + Bond Clean package takes care of both jobs.
